Update to Fatal Pedestrian/Motor vehicle Collision

Earlier Releases:
The name of the deceased pedestrian in the below noted collision is Matthew Howard, age 19, of Sault Ste Marie. Officers from the Sault Ste Marie Police Service Traffic Services Section are still investigating this collision, at this time charges have not been laid.

On Sunday, February 28, 2010 at approximately 3:00 am officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to a pedestrian/single motor vehicle collision on Queen St. East near Lorna Dr. Initial investigation revealed that a 19 year old male who had been walking in an easterly direction on Queen St. East had been struck by a motor vehicle that was also traveling east on Queen St. East. The 19 year old male was transported by ambulance to the Sault Area Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 32 year old male driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was not injured. The name of the deceased is not being released pending the notification of next of kin.
The collision currently is being investigated by officers from the Sault Ste Marie Police Service Traffic Services Section.

Update

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Traffic Investigation Unit, Forensic Unit, along with the Coroner’s Office is continuing the investigation at this time. A Post Mortem was conducted this morning to determine the cause of death of the deceased. Information thus far indicates that the deceased died as a result of injuries he sustained in the collision. Toxicology examinations were conducted on the deceased and the results will not be known for some time.

Domestic Related Arrests

A 46 year-old male was arrested on the 28th of February at 8:38 pm at his residence and charged with two counts of assault. It is alleged that on the 28th of February, on two occasions, the accused assaulted his common law partner at their residence. The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.

A 40 year-old male was arrested on the 26th of February at 7:23 pm and charged with one count of assault, one count of threaten death or bodily harm, one count of assault with a weapon and three counts of breach of probation. It is alleged that on the 26th of February at approximately 7:05 pm the accused , while in an intoxicated state at his residence , assaulted his wife, held a knife to her cat and threatened to kill it and then threw a pot at her. At the time of the incident the accused was on probation with conditions not to molest, harass or physically interfere with the victim, not to attend at her residence and not to consume any alcohol. He is to appear in court on the 31st of March.

Impaired Driving Arrest

64 year-old Linda Taylor of #3-288 Goulais Avenue was arrested just after 8 pm on the 26th of February on Alberta Avenue and charged with one count if impaired driving and one count of consume over the legal limit. It is alleged that on the 26th of February at 7:48 pm the accused was involved in a motor vehicle collision on Bruce Street and at the time she was under the influence of alcohol. No injuries were reported in the collision. She is to appear in court on the 29th of March.

Four Shoplifting Arrests

A 17 year-old male youth was charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00 on the 26th of February after he allegedly attended at the LCBO Store in the Station Mall on this date and stole two bottles of liquor. He was apprehended by mall security and held for police. He is to appear in court on the 30th of March.

24 year-old Alicia Haldenby of #4-2 Wallace Terrace was charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00 on the 26th of February at 7:15 pm after she allegedly attended at Joe’s No Frills on this date and stole some items from the store. She was apprehended by store security and held for police. She is to appear in court on the 29th of March.

18 year-old Drew-Ann Spenser of #3-260 Wellington Street West was charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00 after she allegedly attended at Zellers in the Station Mall around noon on the 27th of February and stole some hair products. She is to appear in court on the 29th of March.

31 year-old Andrew Macdougall of 239 Northern Avenue was charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00 on the 28th of February at 3:20 pm at Rome’s Independent Grocers after he allegedly attended at the store around 2:39 pm on this date and stole some meat products. He is to appear in court on the 22nd of March.

Motor Vehicle Collision on Great Northern Road

On the 28th of February at 1:33 pm City Police attended at a motor vehicle collision in the 700 block of Great Northern Road that sent one involved driver to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. It is alleged that a Pontiac car pulled out of a private drive onto Great Northern Road into the path of a northbound Ford Pickup resulting in the collision. The driver of the Pontiac, 27 year-old Amy James of 564 Wallace Terrace was charged with one count of fail to yield from private drive under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. She was transported to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.
