Assistance Requested The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating the person or persons responsible for two apparently unrelated incidents of mischief with racial overtones.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating the person or persons responsible for two apparently unrelated incidents of mischief with racial overtones.

The first incident occurred between the early afternoon hours of Thursday, May 31st and 8:30 am on Saturday, June 2nd at the east city limits. The culprit(s) rearranged letters from an existing message on a portable signboard to make racial slurs made to offend First Nations People.
The sign in question had been set up on the south side of Trunk Road just inside the city limits.

The second incident, which was reported early this morning, occurred on Manilla Terrace. The culprit(s) responsible for this occurrence used graffiti and words to make derogatory racial remarks against our Racially Diverse Community.

Any person that may have witnessed either of these incidents or observed any suspicious activity in these locations during the time frames stated above are asked to contact the Sault Ste Marie Police at 949-6300.

The Investigation Services is continuing the investigation into these racially motivated occurrences.

Persons found guilty under the Hate Propaganda and Public Incitement sections of the Criminal Code can be liable to
imprisonment of a term not exceeding five years.

Assault with a Weapon

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service was called to the downtown area at approx. 10:30 am Saturday morning regarding an assault. It is alleged that the accused Renee Chakasim and the victim, a 39-year-old female, were involved in an argument. During the argument the accused threw a rock at the victim striking her in the mouth area. 33-year-old Renee Chakasim, of 710 Second Line W. Apt. 4 was arrested and charged with one count of assault with a weapon. She will be appearing in court on July 9th. The victim did not require medical attention.

Impaired Driving

On Saturday June 3 at approx. 6:00 pm officers from the Sault Ste Marie Police Service were called to attend at the Canada Customs bridge plaza regarding an impaired driver. It is alleged that44-year-old Michael Brock, of 615 Cummins St. W. Tecumseh, Michigan, was operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
Mr. Brock was arrested and charged with one count of impaired driving and one count of consume over
80 mgs. of alcohol. He will be appearing in court on July 9.

Break In at Northern Breweries

On Saturday June 2nd at approx. 10:30 am the Sault Ste Marie Police Service arrested two youths on Foster Dr. It is alleged that the two 16-year-olds broke into the Northern Breweries, at 503 Bay St and stole a quantity of beer. It is further alleged that one of the youths also had a weapon on his person that was dangerous to the public. One youth is charged with one count of break and enter and one count of possession of property obtained by crime. The second youth is charged with one count of break and enter one count of possession of property obtained by crime and one count of possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public. Both youth will be appearing in court on July 10th.

Domestic Dispute

Last night at approx.9:00 pm the Sault Ste Marie Police Service was called to attend at an east end address regarding a domestic dispute. After a short investigation a 30-year-old male was arrested. It is alleged that the accused attended at his ex-common-law girlfriend’s address and became involved in an argument with her. When the victim locked the accused out of her residence the accused kicked in the door and then pushed the victim. The accused is charged with one count of assault, one count of mischief and one count of breach of an undertaking. He will be appearing in bail court today. The victim did not require medical attention.

Break & Enters

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service responded to two reports of break-ins this past weekend. A break and enter was reported to a residence in the 200 block of Bennett Blvd- it is unknown what if anything was taken. An n attempted break-in was reported to a residence in the 600 block of MacDonald Ave.
The city police also received two reports of mischief to vehicles. The convertible roof of a vehicle parked in the 900 block of Wellington St. E. was damaged. A second vehicle parked in the 100 block of Wellington St.E. had the rear window smashed.

Public Assistance

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating anyone that may have witnessed a motor vehicle collision on Tuesday May 29th at the intersection of Carmen’s Way and Conmee Ave. The incident involved a 2 door black Hyundai and a blue and white bicycle. Anyone that may have witnessed this collision is asked to contact the Sault Ste Marie Police Service Traffic Service Branch.
