The Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to remind parents and children to play safe during the holidays and for the rest of the winter season. Playing in the snow can be lots of fun but it does have its risks too. The following is a list of tips to help ensure your children’s safety during the winter months.

Children should:
• Never walk and slide on snow banks which are close to the road.
• Never build snow tunnels as they may collapse and the child may risk suffocating under the snow.
• Move out of the way from road plows and trucks.
• Wait until the school bus has come to a complete stop before approaching the door.
• Always sit or kneel when sledding. Children are at a higher risk of head injuries if they lay down.
• Never go out alone to play. Children should go out in twos and be supervised by adults.
• Never play to far from home.
• Never attend the ice rinks or snow hills by themselves.
• Where there no side walks or they’re snow covered always walk facing traffic.

Parents should:
• Make sure kids are dressed appropriately.
• Supervise children who are outside.
• Tell children where their boundaries are to play.
• Supervise children at ice rinks and snow hills.
• Make sure their children have an alternative place to go after school, if for some reason parents are delayed because of snow or weather conditions.
• Remind children to never talk to strangers.

Please review these safety tips with your children and always remind them to play with caution. Have a wonderful and safe holiday and winter season.
