RIDE Campaign The warmer weather is here, and with that comes barbeques, outdoor events, camping and boating. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists and boaters of the dangers of drinking and driving.

The warmer weather is here, and with that comes barbeques, outdoor events, camping and boating. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to remind motorists and boaters of the dangers of drinking and driving. Unfortunately, with the warmer weather, the incidence of impaired driving increases. On average each day in Canada, 4 people are killed and approximately 190 are injured due to impaired driving.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service has started an early RIDE campaign and had RIDE Checkpoints out on the night of Friday April 27th.
410 drivers were stopped. One 12 hour suspension was handed out.

Motorists and boaters are reminded that after a conviction for a drinking and driving offence, their license will be suspended for a minimum of one year.

Assault Charges

A 47 year-old male was arrested at his west-end residence just after 1 am and charged with two counts of assault and one count of threatening to cause death or bodily harm. It is alleged that on the 27th of April just after 6 pm the accused attended at the residence of his ex-common law wife, assaulted her and threatened to kill her. Officers attended around 8 pm at the home of the accused where he was observed inside but refused to answer the door. A warrant was obtained that allowed the residence to be forcibly entered by police. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s Emergency Service Unit was called out to make the arrest.

Assault Causing Bodily Harm

A 23 year-old female was arrested on the 27th of April just before 4 pm at her east-end residence and charged with one count of assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm. It is alleged that in late March of this year the accused assaulted her husband at their home by throwing him into some furniture. The accused assaulted her husband again on the 27th of April by punching and kicking him several times and throwing him into a door. The victim required hospital treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Assault Charge

A 26 year-old male was arrested just after 8 pm on the 28th of April at his west-end residence and charged with one count of assault. It is alleged that on this date around 7:30 pm the accused assaulted his common law wife by kicking her.

Assault Causing Bodily Harm

19 year-old Michael Genetti was arrested just after 6 pm at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre and charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm. It is alleged that the accused made a phone call to a male known to him on the 27th of April from the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre and threatened to slice his throat.

Imapired

49 year-old Andrzaj Borowski of 213 Grand Blvd. was arrested on the 29th of April just after 9 pm and charged with one count of impaired driving and one count of consume over the legal limit. It is alleged that around 9:15 pm officers on patrol observed a green van eastbound on Strand Avenue travelling very slowly with no lights activated. The vehicle was observed swerving across the road and hitting a curb. The vehicle was stopped and police discovered the driver to be under the influence of alcohol. The accused is to appear in court on the 28th of May.

Break and Enters

The following break and enters were reported over the weekend:

1) A residence in the 700 block of Wellington Street East was entered some time between the 23rd of April and the 27th of April. Medication and some tobacco were taken.
2) A rear shed in the 900 block of Second Line East was entered between the 21st of April and the 27th of April. Two car fenders were reported stolen.
3) A garage on Leo Avenue was entered on the 28th of April. A mountain bike was taken and a vehicle inside the garage was entered and a wallet with some money was stolen.
4) An apartment on Carufel Avenue was entered during the past three weeks. A DVD player, a bell receiver and recorder for a TV and a computer router were taken.

City police are investigating several mischief complaints over the weekend

1) A rear residence fence was damaged on Tancred Street.
2) A vehicle on Fairmount Drive was damaged.
3) A window was broken at the Algoma Health Unit on Foster Drive.
4) A garage in the 400 block of Wellington Street East was spray painted.
5) The glass window of the City bus shelter outside the YMCA was damaged.
