Sault Police say a drunk driver was found asleep at the wheel this weekend — and then reversed his vehicle into a police cruiser when officers woke him up.

At around 3:45 a.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of Lake Street and Trunk Road for a report of a person sleeping in his car.

When they arrived, officers parked their cruisers in front and behind the person’s vehicle.

“When awoken by officers, the driver reversed the vehicle into a police cruiser and continued to do so until officers were able to gain access to the vehicle through a window and put the vehicle in park,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “None of the responding officers sustained physical injuries.”

The suspect provided multiple breath samples that were all above the legal limit, police say.

Tyler Birch, 21, is charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Drug and/or Alcohol
  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration 80+

He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on April 15.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Birch is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
