A 40-year-old was arrested early this morning after someone attacked an employee on Trunk Road and spit at city police officers.

At around 3 a.m., someone phoned 911 to report an assault at a business in the 700 block of Trunk Road.

“An investigation revealed the accused had assaulted an employee when asked to leave the business, punching them and hitting them with a stool,” says a news release issued Wednesday by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “The victim sustained physical injuries and was taken to hospital.”

Police say the suspect left the business before officers arrived, but was located nearby and arrested.

“During the arrest, the accused spit at officers,” the news release says.

Derek Sutherland is charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and assaulting a peace officer.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Sutherland is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
