A 46-year-old is facing multiple charges after allegedly breaking into a downtown business early this morning.

At around 5 a.m. Monday, someone phoned 911 to report a break and enter at a business in the 500 block of Queen Street East.

When officers arrived, they found damaged property but nobody inside.

Police say a person who matched the description of the suspect was found nearby and arrested.

"A search found the accused to be in possession of stolen merchandise from the business," says a news release issued by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Charles Walton, 46, is charged with:

  • Break and Enter – Commit Indictable Offence
  • Theft Under $5,000
  • Mischief Under $5,000
  • Failure to Comply with Probation Order

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Walton is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
