A 31-year-old man is facing multiple charges, including impaired driving, after his vehicle smashed into a pole on Chambers Avenue early Saturday morning.

Sault Police arrived on the scene at around 12:30 a.m. They found a man standing on a sidewalk near his vehicle, which had struck a pole off the roadway.

“Upon speaking with the driver, officers developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “The accused provided multiple breath samples into an approved screening device and all results were above the legal limit. They were arrested.”

Jacob Richard is charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80+)
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Drive While Under Suspension (Under the Highway Traffic Act)

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on Oct. 16, 2023.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Richard is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
