Charge laid in Sault's first murder of 2017

Sault Ste. Mare Police Service released the following statement.

Update to suspicious death investigation

Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are still at the scene of a suspicious death at 112 Wellington Street West. Officers responded to a call for service just after 6 a.m. this morning. Shortly after they arrived a male victim was found deceased.

As a result of the investigation to this point, a 24-year-old male from Sault Ste. Marie was taken into custody and has been charged with one count of First Degree Murder. He will appear in bail court on Monday morning.  

Officers with the Criminal Investigations Division are continuing their investigation into this matter and the 100 block of Wellington Street West will remain closed to traffic while the investigation continues.

Suspicious death being investigated

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are currently on the scene of a suspicious death at 112 Wellington Street West. Just after 6 a.m. on Saturday Jan. 14, officers with the Patrol Services Division responded to a call regarding a possible deceased male.

Shortly after officers arrived, it was determined that the victim was deceased. At this time one male is in custody, however no formal charges have been laid.  Officers with the Criminal Investigations Division are continuing the investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available.

One man is confirmed dead and a male is in custody as a result of an early morning incident at a residence on Wellington Street West.

Police arrived at an address in the 100 block of Wellington Street West, between Brown and Gloucester Streets, at about 6:15 a.m.

Shortly before 9 a.m., police removed a witness from the building through a side window.

A major police investigation into that incident on Wellington Street West is currently in progress and the street is expected to remain closed for most of the day.

Six police vehicles are on the block and police can be seen conducting an investigation into an incident that occurred at 112 Wellington West.

The street is closed to all traffic between Brown and Gloucester Streets and is expected to remain closed most of the day.

Police tape surrounds both residential buildings in the block and extends onto part of the former MF service station property.
