Human remains found on St. Joseph Island identified as missing Sault woman

11:45 a.m. update:
OPP stated in a release issued today that the deceased has been positively identified as 74-year-old Sally Gibson of Sault Ste. Marie.

The investigation continues.

The discovery of human remains on St. Joseph Island is currently under investigation.

According to a news release issued today by the the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the discovery was made on Aug. 25 on a logging road in the area of S Line in Hilton Township.

OPP Constable Bev Gauthier told SooToday that officers discovered the remains after responding to a report regarding an abandoned vehicle described as a four-door car, brown in colour.

A post-mortem examination took place in Toronto on Monday. However, the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the East Algoma OPP Crime Unit, the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

OPP will not be releasing further details at this time.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is currently investigating the disappearance of Sally Gibson who was reported missing by family on Aug. 18.

Gibson left her St. Joseph Island cottage to travel to Manitoba on Aug. 14. She has not been seen or heard from since.

She was reportedly driving a gold-brown 2010 Toyota Corolla with Ontario plate number BVHZ 260.
