Arson Investigation
A 39 year-old male is currently in custody and facing numerous charges in relation to an overnight domestic related incident that involved a fire at the apartment complex at 385 Cathcart Street. The Sault Ste. Marie Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the six-unit building at 1:16 am this morning. Residents were evacuated and there are no injuries to report. Police remain at the scene, the investigation is ongoing and there are no further details to be released at this time

Domestic Related Arrests
Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested a 30 year-old male overnight at an east end residence and charged him with one count of assault causing bodily harm. It is alleged that on the 1st of October at approximately 1:50 am the accused assaulted his ex-common law partner while at his residence. The victim received injuries that required medical attention. The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.

Male Charged with Assault
Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 52 year-old Roderick Mitchell of 41 Garden Avenue last evening at the police station and charged him with one count of assault. It is alleged that the accused was wanted for an incident from the on the 29th of September when the accused punched a 19 year-old male, not known to him, while on Pine Street. It is alleged that the two males were operating vehicles in the area of Queen Street East and McGregor Avenue and when the victim made a turn in front of the accused male’s truck, the accused passed him, cut in front of his vehicle and slammed on the brakes. The victim had to break suddenly to avoid a collision. When the two stopped for the red traffic light at Pine Street, the accused got out of his pickup truck, approached the victim’s vehicle, began to yell at him and then punched him in the face. The accused is to appear in court on the 1st of November.

Female Arrested for Theft
22 year-old Samantha Pietarinen of 1261 Wellington Street East (basement unit) was arrested by officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service yesterday at 3:50 pm on Wellington Street East and charged with one count of theft under $5,000. It is alleged that on the 30th of September the accused stole some money from a person known to her while at her residence. The accused is to appear in court on the 1st of November.

Shoplifter Arrested for Theft and Drug Possession
28 year-old Louise Auger of 137 East Street was arrested by officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police yesterday afternoon and charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and two counts of possession of a controlled drug or substance. It is alleged that on the 30th of September at approximately 11 am the accused attended at Zellers in the Station Mall and stole some clothing. She was apprehended by store security and held for police. At the time of her arrest, the accused was found in possession of small amount of marijuana and oxycontin tablets. She is to appear in court on the 1st of November.

RIDE Program Results
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service conducted a RIDE Program last evening. There were 57 vehicles checked. One three-day suspension was issued.
