Aggravated Assault Investigation Update – Wanted Youth Arrested and Charged with Aggravated Assault:

Earlier Release: 

At approximately 8:51 last night, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service received a call regarding a male that had been assaulted in the 300 block of Albert Street East.  Officers investigating the incident learned that there was a gathering at a residence in the 300 block of Albert Street East and when one of the males left the residence he was involved in an altercation with some persons in the entrance way of the building.  The male was then allegedly assaulted by four to six persons on the sidewalk area just outside the home. 

The 24 year-old male victim was transported to Sault Area Hospital with serious injuries that do not appear to be life threatening at this time.  The suspects all fled the area when police were called.  An investigation commenced. 

One of the persons allegedly involved, 18 year-old Tara Lynn Swanson, of #2-54 Cathcart Street was arrested overnight with regards to this incident and was charged with one count of aggravated assault.   Further, she was found to be breaching her recognizance order by not complying with her curfew conditions and for being in the company of another female that she was not to associate with.  She was also charged with two counts of breach of a recognizance order.  She is to appear in bail court this morning.  

Police have identified another male youth involved in the incident and are attempting to locate him at this time.  The investigation is ongoing and police are seeking the identity of the other suspects involved in the incident. 

Update: 

On the 19th of January at 11:15 pm, officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested the 16 year-old male youth that was allegedly involved in this incident after he turned himself in at the police station.  He has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of breach of a recognizance order in relation to curfew conditions.  He is to appear in bail court this morning.

Impaired Driving Arrest:

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 39 year-old Jason Macmillan of 817 Peoples Road at 11:30 pm last night on Queen Street East and charged him with one count of impaired driving and one count of consume over the legal limit. 

It is alleged that on the 19th of January at approximately 11:16 pm officers attended in the area of Queen Street East in response to a traffic complaint involving a possible impaired driver.  When officers located the vehicle on Queen Street East and checked the driver, the accused, they found him under the influence of alcohol. 

He was subsequently arrested and is to appear in court on the 27th of February. 

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Charged Three Persons in Relation to Shoplifting Incidents:

Two 13 year-old male youths were charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00 on the 19th of January at 10:55 am at Rome’s Independent Grocers after they allegedly attended at the store and stole some items. They are to appear in court on the 21st of February.

Paula Kehoe, age 31, of 326 Beverley Street was charged with one count of theft under $5,000 on the 19th of January at 7:20 pm at Sears in the Station Mall after she allegedly attended at the store and stole several items.  She is to appear in court on the 27th of February. 

Female Arrested On Outstanding Warrant: 

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 40 year-old Shannon Edwards of 332 Wellington Street East on an outstanding warrant at the police station on the 19th of January at 6:55 am.  She was charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of breach of probation.  It is alleged that she was wanted for an incident from the 19th of November 2011, when she took out $49.00 from a bank account of a person known to her using their debit card without permission.  At the time the accused was on a probation order with conditions to keep the peace and be good. She is to appear in court on the 13th of February. 

Break and Enter/Theft Reports:

  • A residence on Lewis Road was entered yesterday.  Some coins were reported stolen.
  • A vehicle on Carufel Avenue was entered on the 19th overnight.  A Tom Tom GPS was reported taken. 

Mischief Report:  

A window was smashed at a business in the 400 block of Queen Street East.
