The March Break wasn’t very fun for one particular local driver, who was temporarily stripped of their licence and slapped with a hefty fine for using a cell phone behind the wheel.

The distracted driving ticket — which comes with an automatic three-day licence suspension, three demerit points and a minimum fine of $615 — was among the dozens of infractions written up by Sault Police during a March Break traffic blitz.

Between March 11 and 15, officers conducted a “Dynamic Patrol” initiative targeting bad drivers. All told, officers performed 40 additional hours of traffic enforcement and issued the following:

  • 98 Highway Traffic Act (HTA) offence notices
  • 16 speeding tickets
  • One (1) Hand-held devices prohibited – Wireless communication devices (distracted driving) ticket

“The traffic enforcement Dynamic Patrol project targeted high traffic areas of our community,” said Inspector Derek Dewar in a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “Officers spent time conducting traffic enforcement on Peoples Road, Black Road, and 4th Line West, to name a few areas.”

Dynamic Patrol is an ongoing initiative aimed at increasing police presence in residential neighbourhoods and near businesses.

“Deployment of officers will take place as necessary in various areas of the community,” the release states.
