Driver charged after car crashes into school bus

Collision occurred Wednesday morning at the intersection of Wellington Street East and Simpson Street

A Sault Police spokesperson says a driver was following too close when their car collided into the rear end of a school bus on Wednesday morning.

Lincoln Louttit, spokesperson for Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, said there were no physical injuries reported in the collision, which occurred at the corner of Wellington Street East and Simpson Street.

An eyewitness said there were children on the bus at the time of the collision. First Student, the company that operates the bus, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The impact was severe enough that the front of the car ended up lodged underneath the rear bumper of the bus.

The bus was apparently travelling westbound and turning right on to Simpson Street, where it is required to stop before the train tracks.

"The 20-year-old driver has been charged with following too close under the Highway Traffic Act," said Lincoln Louttit, spokesperson for Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Police blocked both lanes of westbound traffic for a time as a tow truck operator removed the vehicle from underneath the bus.
