UPDATE: Elderly woman dies in house fire south of Sault, Michigan

Three law enforcement officers attempted to enter the house but the smoke and heat were too much

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. – A house fire near Rudyard, just south of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on Wednesday evening claimed the life of an elderly woman.

The call came in just before 7 p.m. of the fire on H-40 just west of Rudyard.

Chippewa County Undersheriff Larry Hough, a deputy and a Michigan State Police Trooper were first on the scene. 

Hough said they tried to enter the house to save the person but the smoke and heat were too much.

Two adults and two children who were in the house were able to make it out before police arrived.

They told the deputy that the fire started in the basement.

Rudyard, Pickford and Kinross volunteer fire departments all responded along Kinross EMS and Chippewa County Victim Services Unit.

Michigan State Police will be in charge of investigating the cause of the fire.
