UPDATE: Careless disposal of smoking material sparked Campbell Avenue house fire

Nobody injured in Wednesday blaze; Sault Fire Services says smoking materials should never be thrown on ground, discarded in flower planters or garbage receptacles

Update:

A home in the 100 block of Campbell Avenue sustained extensive damage in a fire that broke out shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Smoke and fire were both visible when firefighters arrived on scene, according to a news release from Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services.

Crews were able to contain the fire, which caused significant fire and smoke damage to the dwelling. PUC Services and Enbridge Gas also attended the scene.

No injuries were reported. An investigation determined the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services would like to remind all citizens to properly dispose of smoking materials in a metal container that is filled with sand or water, along with having a lid for even further protection. Smoking materials should never be thrown on the ground, discarded in flower planters or garbage receptacles.
