UPDATE: Charges laid against driver who crashed into west-end house

Woman behind wheel of white sedan that collided with home on Second Line West on Wednesday charged with impaired, dangerous operation

Sault Police say a woman was high on drugs and driving dangerously when she veered off the road Wednesday morning and crashed into a house on Second Line West.

As SooToday reported at the time, a white sedan collided with the front steps of a home on Second Line West near Arden Street sometime around 8:30 a.m. on May 15, sustaining damage to the front end of the vehicle in the process.

In a news release issued Friday, Sault Police revealed that a person phoned 911 that morning to say someone "who was stumbling on their feet" got into a car on Arbor Drive and drove away.

"Another caller reported the vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the road," the news release says. "While officers were on their way to the area, a third call reported the vehicle had crashed into a residence in the 700 block of Second Line West."

Police say when officers arrived at the scene, they developed grounds to believe the driver was impaired by drugs. She was arrested and taken to hospital for a blood sample.

Laura Opala, 29, is charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Drug and/or Alcohol
  • Dangerous Operation

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on July 8, 2024.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Opala is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
