UPDATE: Suspect with knives, hatchet and hammer in custody after airport lockdown

Sault Police say the unnamed person was detained under the Mental Health Act; lockdown lifted and roads now open

A lockdown has been lifted at the Sault Airport after police located a person with knives, a hatchet and a hammer.

The person was detained under the Mental Health Act, says a follow-up news release issued tonight by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. Nobody was injured.

At 5:31 p.m. Wednesday, police issued an initial news release saying the Sault Ste. Marie Airport was locked down after someone phoned 911 to report a person armed with a weapon in the area.

"This is an active scene and community members are urged to avoid the area to allow officers to conduct the investigation," the release said.

Multiple police cruisers and an ambulance were seen speeding toward the airport. Officers with Patrol Services, along with members of the Emergency Services Unit, responded to the call.

By 6:15 p.m., passengers could be seen lined up at the airport security gate.

SooToday will provide more details as they become available.
