Arson charge laid in Mother's Day fire on Albert Street

A 33-year-old has been charged with arson after a Mother’s Day fire damaged a downtown business.

At around 5:30 a.m. on May 12, firefighters responded to a call in the 300 block of Albert Street East.

“The fire, which damaged property, was deemed to be suspicious in nature and Sault Police were called to attend,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Investigators quickly identified a suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest.

The next day, at approximately 4 p.m., officers located the suspect in the 300 block of Queen Street East and arrested him.

Tyler Verville is charged with one count of arson.

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on July 8.

The charge has not been tested in court and Verville is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
