Arson charge after truck torched on Portage Lane

A 36-year-old faces a charge of arson after an investigation by Sault Ste. Marie police.

Around 2:40 a.m. on Feb. 7, 911 Communicators received a report of a fire on Portage Lane, a news release said. Upon arrival, officers saw a truck burning beside the train tracks, which was subsequently extinguished by Fire Services.

An investigation found the accused was at the scene of the arson and involved with it, the release added. Detectives obtained a warrant for their arrest. On Feb. 12, detectives with Investigation Services, with assistance frrom Patrol Services, charged 36-year-old Melanie Mackan, the release added.

The accused was located at a residence in the 500 block of Albert Street West and arrested on the strength of the warrant.

The accused is charged with:

  • Arson – damage to property
  • Failure to comply with undertaking

The accused is in custody pending a bail hearing.
