Arrest made in Second Line pedestrian death investigation

On June 21, 2018 officers with the Investigation Services Division of The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service arrested 84-year-old John Gauley of Pittsburg Avenue for failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

Just before 1 p.m. on May 22, 83-year-old Vincenzo Mauro of Sault Ste. Marie was walking southbound crossing Second Line West near Turner Avenue. It is alleged that at the same time, the accused was operating his motor vehicle eastbound on Second Line West.

The vehicle that the accused was operating struck the pedestrian and then the accused continued driving making no attempt to stop or offer assistance to the pedestrian. Mr. Mauro was transported from the scene to the hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.

On June 22, the accused was taken into custody and charged with one count of failing to stop at the scene of a collision under the Criminal Code and one count of failing to report a collision under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

He will appear in court on July 23, 2018.
