Arrest made after jewelry taken from Bay Street business: Police

Sault Police have arrested Loretta Carey for robbery.

A news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service alleges that on Monday afternoon, the 39-year-old took jewelry valued at $1,175 from a Bay Street business.

The accused was apprehended a short time later near Elgin Street and Wellington Street East.

On Nov. 16, 2020 officers with Patrol Services arrested 39-year-old Loretta Carey for robbery.

Around 12:25 p.m., [it is alleged that] the accused attended a business in the 200 block of Bay Street and selected jewelry from a display case. A staff member asked the accused to put the jewelry down and leave the store. The accused refused, pushed past the staff member and left the area. The estimated value of the items taken is $1,175.

Officers located the accused at 1:41 p.m. in the area of Elgin Street and Wellington Street East. Upon speaking with the accused officers observed she had a number of items from the store with tags still on them.

She was arrested and charged with robbery, possession of property obtained by crime, and breach of recognizance. She was held for bail court.
