Altercation at Great Northern business leads to charges

Incident was between a staff member and a person who was attempting to return an item

An altercation has led to a 31-year-old facing assault and theft charges.

On Feb. 1, 911 Communications received a report of an altercation where the victim was assaulted and robbed.

The victim was attempting to return an item at a business in the 100 block of Great Northern Road when an argument began with the accused, who is a staff member at the business.

The victim left the business and police say the accused followed them, grabbed their wrist, pushed them, and then took their cellphone. Police also say the accused dropped the phone on the ground and unsuccessfully tried to run it over with their vehicle.

On Feb. 7, officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services' Patrol Services Unit arrested Mukesh Kumar in connection with the incident.

Kumar, 31, has been charged with:

  • assault (X2)
  • theft – under $5,000
  • obstructing justice

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Kumar is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
