Darsombra back in town, just in time for summer solstice

Darsombra straddles many genres, including prog rock, psychedelic rock, stoner metal and space rock.

They are no strangers to the Sault and will be returning for a special show on the summer solstice on Wednesday, June 21.

“We feel fortunate to be landing in the Sault on the summer solstice,” says Brian Daniloski, composer, guitarist, bassist and vocalist for Darsombra.

“We love it because it's the day with the most sunlight. We usually host a solstice show in our hometown of Baltimore, but this year we decided to tour.”

The duo is rounded out by Ann Everton on synth, vocals, percussion, and projections.

The duo has become known for their somewhat hallucinogenic performances. 

They first played the Sault back in 2017, returning for a show in 2019, and slated to perform locally once again in 2020, but the pandemic had other ideas.

“We’ve always felt very welcomed in Sault Ste. Marie and always had a good time,” says Daniloski.

“This upcoming show is a reschedule from a tour that we were supposed to do in summer 2020. We're thrilled to finally be coming back.”

They are clearly performers who keep their promises.

Self-labeled as “trans-apocalyptic galaxy rock,” the duo was attracted to music that defies easy labelling.

“We are attracted to freedom in presentation and hopefully audiences with open minds … as for the name, we were having fun with words on that one,” laughs Daniloski.

“Bands are expected to put themselves in a genre box, but we don't quite sound like any band or genre that we know of, so we figured if we had to do that, why not make up our own genre? We also think we're currently living in some pretty unusual times, hence ‘trans-apocalyptic galaxy rock.’”

As David Bowie’s aptly-titled song pronounces, it is all about “sound and vision.”

Daniloski notes that his bandmate Everton is also a filmmaker.

“It definitely helps to add another dimension to our music,” he says, recognizing that each audience member’s expectation is unique and individual.

“Whatever people get out of it is fine, but we make the point to put on a stage show with something extra for people who are looking for it.”

The duo has become known for their “do-it-yourself” approach to music, self-producing their music and videos and booking their own tours globally.

“It's satisfying for sure, but comes with its challenges,” says Daniloski.

“It's definitely a lot of hard work.”

Darsombra will be performing free on Wednesday, June 21 at the March Street Stage

Special guest Chase James Wigmore will open the show.

Music begins at 8:30 p.m.

There will also be a little vendors' market featuring local goodies! Market opens at 6:30 p.m.
