Happy Holidays to everyone back home in Sault Ste. Marie!

My husband and I are currently working as teachers at an International School in Doha, Qatar in the Middle East.

Being so far away from home during the holidays is difficult, but we try to make up for it by taking exciting vacations and seeing other parts of the world.

This year we had planned on spending our first Christmas as a married couple on the beach and in the jungles and mountains of Sri Lanka.

However, some things don’t always go as planned.

The morning of our flight on December 23, 2011 my husband woke me up and said he needed to get to the hospital.

I didn’t question him and we rushed straight over.

In no time at all the doctors confirmed his worry - appendicitis.

He was prepared for surgery and taken to the operating room.

After a successful appendectomy the surgeon said it was one of the worst cases he’d ever seen and that waiting any longer would have caused it to rupture.

My husband spent the next three days in the hospital and I by his side.

We cancelled our trip and plans for the holidays.

Even though it wasn’t the Christmas we planned, we are incredibly thankful for the way things turned out.

If we had been on a plane just hours later or in Sri Lanka where the medical care is substandard - it scares me to think what the outcome could have been.

The old adage of “all I want for Christmas is you” has certainly held true for me this year and I will always be grateful for not knowing what could have happened.

Peace and love to everyone,

Amy Nisbett
