As promised, the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society is keeping Facebook followers updated on the progress of Karma, who arrived at the shelter Friday severely under-nourished and frightened.

According to recent Facebook postings, Karma is improving.

The veterinarian caring for Karma told shelter staff that she's eating well, her spirit has lifted dramatically, her tail is wagging, and she's even giving kisses.

She still has a long road ahead of her, however.

Karma requires surgery (the nature of which was not disclosed) but cannot be put under anesthetic until she gains some strength.

Response to Karma's story has been overwhelming and the Humane Society is doing its best to keep up.

"We were not expecting this, nor were we prepared. We are doing our best to keep up but we are only a small group and it is taking all of our resources to provide for Karma, to assist with the investigation, and receive the public who are coming to the shelter with gifts," staff wrote on Facebook.

"As there is an investigation underway, we cannot post updated pictures or any greater detail than that in our updated statuses. We do not want to jeopardize any aspect of the work of the police. We also can assure you that the puppies have not been forgotten."

In addition to cash donations, the Humane Society also accepts donations of blankets, towels, toys and treats for their critters.

One fan of Karma posted and item for bid on the Sault 24 Hour Auctions Facebook page that sparked an impressive bidding war.

With all proceeds going to support Karma's recovery, the posted item - a set of kitchen knives that retails for $69.99 - sold to the highest bidder for $302.
