Do you know this poor dog's owner? (update)

Friday, March 22, 2013   by: Donna Hopper
It would appear this poor pooch's owner has been located.

An update posted to the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society's Facebook page indicates that an investigation into the circumstances that lead to the dog's extremely poor health is under way.

Shelter staff promised regular updates on her condition as she spends this coming weekend at a veterinary clinic.

"Your response to her situation has been overwhelming to say the least and has resulted in the owner being found, donations of blankets, toys and food, and more than $1,500 in donations which will ensure she gets the veterinary care she so desperately needs," the statement reads.

Since she was left at the shelter with no information - not even a name - staff at the Humane Society have chosen to call her Karma.

At the time of writing, Karma's photo on the shelter's Facebook page had been shared 1,437 times and received 1,053 comments.

"We want you to know that NONE of this would have been possible without the help of our Facebook friends," the statement continues. "She has a rough road ahead of her and we ask that you keep Karma in your hearts - we want her to make it through this ordeal and live the life she so deserves. THANK YOU from Karma and the shelter staff!"

Original 10:25 a.m. article

Staff at the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society are not having a pleasant start to the weekend.

This obviously frightened and under-nourished canine was found in the shelter's after hours drop-off cage this morning with no information, not even her name.

"We are absolutely sickened and are keeping our fingers crossed that there is no underlying medical condition and that all she needs is food and love," states a note left on the photo posted to the Humane Society's Facebook page.

Shelter staff are requesting anyone with information about who may have been this dog's owner to call the Humane Society at 705-949-3573.

Name suggestions are also welcome for this poor pooch.

I hope something can be done to the people who are responsible for this...
the best thing that has happened to that dog is being dropped off at the shelter...I hope she recovers....
friendlyone24 3/22/2013 10:35:53 AM Report

Sad....I'd call her..."Hope".
And lets all "hope" she learns to trust as she's nutured back from hell.
Koodoos to all involved in this process!

OMG..Who can do such a thing?
Beats22 3/22/2013 10:40:20 AM Report

Who does this shit!!!! This poor gal looks like she has been nursing..it appears they used her for what they needed and now...toss her away! I would like to think that the person who gave her up obviously couldn't afford to care for her properly anymore. Let's hope she can trust another human to take care of her properly! I too think Hope is a great name for her!!!
Slim Shady 3/22/2013 10:40:41 AM Report

I would love to beat the bastard(s) that did this. How you treat animals is often an indicator on how you treat other human beings.

In this day and age if you can't afford to care for an animal there is always help.

As for a name.... "Lucky" comes to mind.... She's lucky to have been saved than live with the douche bags that cared for her.
Just Curious 3/22/2013 10:41:58 AM Report

Hope would be a great name for her,but there should be"no hope" for the ones that did this to her when they are found.. There are a lot of sick people in this world.:(
Daiv 3/22/2013 10:42:15 AM Report

This is sick.
I hope somebody is available to care for this dog and get her healthy again.
So sad that people abuse their animals like this - but people also abuse their kids like this, so...
Sad world.

I agree with whoever said that the best thing that could have happened for this dog was when she got dropped off at the Humane Society.
this is me 3/22/2013 10:50:30 AM Report

Whoever u r, may u rot in hell for this. People like this discust me. How about we starve and mistreet u? I personally would like to beat the living shit out of u-sick bastard!!!

I am so glad we have a Human Society and I am glad this poor pooch finally made it there. I just wish it was a few weeks or even months ago that she made it there. I think Hope is a great name. I beg and plead with anyone who cannot feed their animal anymore, please dont be selfish, let them go and bring them somewhere that can. This should have NOT happened to "Man's best friend"
stuey 3/22/2013 11:02:11 AM Report

I second the "Lucky" name cause she is lucky to have survived. Now hopefully there's a loving home somewhere here for her.
jessiegirl 3/22/2013 11:02:52 AM Report

Will this poor girl get to spend some time at the vet getting her strength back?? I certainly hope so - and I also hope that whoever did this to her rots in hell.....
tree frog 3/22/2013 11:04:14 AM Report

Name: Bones (She would probably enjoy them more than showing them)

It is very sad that this poor thing had to endure this. So I would like to suggest if you would like to support and feed her (as we all can't take her in and care for her) Go get a bag dog food (what you can afford) and bring it to humane society. As they have many pets in need.
makemyday 3/22/2013 11:05:13 AM Report

I'm too pissed to say anything else.
kw126 3/22/2013 11:08:10 AM Report

Thank you sooo much to the Humane Society for everything you do! I can't imagine how someone could treat a poor helpless animal this way, and I hope karma comes around to find whoever it was. Too many people are getting dogs because they think they are cute and they have zero idea on how to care for it and have no patience or time to train it, and no extra cash to feed it and FIX it!! This is beyond disgusting behaviour and people need to grow up and be responsible! I also agree on the name Hope. It is a beautiful name for such a beautiful dog who has been through hell but is hanging tough to survive through it all
squirel 3/22/2013 11:09:08 AM Report

I think "Chance" would be a good name. It is really upsetting to think that someone(s) could do this to such a beautiful animal... Someone will beable to give this dog a second "Chance".
tooter 3/22/2013 11:14:44 AM Report

OMG!!! this is horrible how could you treat an animal like that all they want is your love and attention and this is what some sicko did to this poor defenseless dog.I agree when they find the sicko that did this do the same thing to them there is NO excuse to do this even give them table scraps if u can't afford the dog food for cring out loud don't starve it to death or if you couldnt afford it give it up before it got this bad my gosh how would they feel to starve. I like the name Hope, it will give her hope for a good life with a good family that will love and take care of her and hopefully she will learn to trust ppl again that they won't do this to her and she can live a good life.
goalie55 3/22/2013 11:15:44 AM Report

Bastards! May you rot in hell!!!! I think that it is about time that the humane society install surveillance camera(s) at the after hours box.......maybe that will deter these maggots from discarding these poor animals OR at least assist in bringing the person(s) responsible to justice.
I realize that this will cost money, but I will be willing to donate the 1st hundred dollars towards one........anyone else???
troubador 3/22/2013 11:20:47 AM Report

the best thing they did was (discard) this dog... if there were cameras they might not have
Paddlenut 3/22/2013 11:23:37 AM Report

The problem with that goalie is that cameras might dissuade people from dropping off animals at all. This makes me so angry.
Rod Aubertin 3/22/2013 11:24:08 AM Report

I think that installing surveilance cameras would stop people from dropping off animals at the Humane Society and they would probably let them loose out in the bush with a very little chance for survival.

I think Angel would be a good name as an Angel was looking out for this sweet girl.

My thoughts and prayers go to this now loved pooch
mixerman55 3/22/2013 11:26:30 AM Report

I would call her angel. I am also concerned about her pups and whats happening to them, Yes I would like to see criminal charges brought to the ones responsible.
Mr. Poster 3/22/2013 11:26:56 AM Report

I had to put my dog down in Decemeber and cannot imagine anyone doing such a thing to a DOG who expects little and doles out a whole lot of love. There has to be a special place in hell for these people. There are no excuses...if they did not want the dog they could have called and the humane society would have picked her up.
SaultJammer 3/22/2013 11:38:39 AM Report

I agree with all the negative comments that are directed towards the owner(s) of this unfortunate dog. SCUMBAGS! - I am going to the shelter after work today to see if i can adopt her after she has been cleared for adoption and release. I don't care what it costs to help her. She is a beautiful dog and you can see the hurt and scared look on her face - it's disgusting that an animal which places unconditional (and unlimited) love and trust in humans would have been treated so cruely. I have been recently mulling over the thought of getting a new friend (dog) after my last friend (dog) passed away 1 1/2 yrs. ago. I think i'm ready to move on now and i believe this would be the best way to proceed. I promise that if i am able to adopt her i will do my best to nurture her and gain her trust and love. I always have somebody at home even when i'm at work myself so there will be no times that she will be left alone. There are no children in my home, only adults that care and love dogs and we all have a hole in our lives that needs just this to happily fill it.

Just 1 side note...

It does appear that she has recently been nursing pups. I can only hope to God that those pups are not in the same hands that owned this dog... we need to know if anybody can either positively confirm or deny that. Please contact the Humane Society of SSM if you do know. You do not have to leave your name to save an animal's life...
Sault_Girl 3/22/2013 11:40:13 AM Report

I wonder how much $$ these disgusting people made selling her puppies? I've taken up a collection at work already for this poor girl. Thank god for the Humane Society.
Koolaid 3/22/2013 11:41:06 AM Report

Looks to me like she just had pups and they drained her of nutrition. The owners did not feed her the right food. Looks worse then it is.
Jitterbug 3/22/2013 11:43:13 AM Report

Someone should know who the owners are since she had pups. Come forward and get these sick bastards charged
vic-star 3/22/2013 11:45:21 AM Report

My family dog was put down one week ago, and it was a terrible thing to go through, I can not imagine someone treating their dog that way. I had so much love for our dog, it sickens me to see people treat their animals like this. If you can't care for your dog, or you don't want the dog anymore, there are several options better than letting her starve like that!! I'm glad she made it to the humane society, I only wish that it dad happened months ago. I also hope her pups have found their way to better homes.
Rod Aubertin 3/22/2013 11:49:39 AM Report

Wish you all the best in the adoption SaultJammer. I would have loved to adopt her but with two cute girls at home already it would have been a little too much
happyhomer 3/22/2013 11:50:30 AM Report

There is just no words to describe how sad and angry this makes me...SOMEBODY, somewhere out there knows who "owned" this poor girl and hopefully they have a heart and turn whoever is responsible for this in to the police to face the consequences deserved in this matter!!! I agree criminal charges should be laid....very disturbed!!!
Neon_Angel 3/22/2013 11:50:34 AM Report

I really hope that someone comes forward with information of this dog's owner. Whether it's your friend or neighbor that you feel bad turning in, they don't deserve to be protected if this is how they treat animals.

I also hope that the city police get involved, even if it's following up every small lead, this is a blatant demonstration of animal cruelty, and this jackass needs to be held accountable.

As for her name, I think it needs to be something special. I was thinking Adora, which is latin for loved child, which she will hopefully be with a nice family.

SaultJammer, I have utmost respect for you and hope that you are able to adopt this poor girl and give her what she needs. I'm sure if you are successful at the adoption, there are many of us who would love to see some posted photos of her recovery. Whoever could let a dog starve in this way, deserves to pay for the hurt and the pain. We have to keep an open mind however as the person who dropped off this little girl may have picked up the dog from a terrible location and dropped it off at the humane society out of good faith.

I wonder if maybe this dog was lost somewhere for a long time and walked a long ways and got found.
Wishful thinking I guess. More likely someone saw her being neglected and turned her in. Poor thing.
GotRotties 3/22/2013 1:44:39 PM Report

I am pretty sure they have surveillance cameras there, I know they do inside the shelter...remember when someone stole the kitten and they posted the pics on Sootoday? anyway..you have to wonder when the person finally decides that the dog needs help...look at the backbone...that degree of starvation does not happen overnight...this is months worth of abuse..I am sure the owner didnt go without eating..and I personally would certainly feed any animal I had before I fed myself..if things are that bad and they cannot feed the dog they could have asked for help, or they could have rehomed it..I bet this dog spent a large amount of time alone suffering while this moron went on with their life...dispicable, disgusting and sadly they probably wont get much of a sentence if anything, maybe a fine...thats why, PEOPLE, we have to ask for stronger animal cruelty laws!!

HOW Sick!! I once had a dog when I was younger, he was left alone like this one was, starving and often beaten by passers by. We brought the dog home and my parents and brothers instantly accepted him as our own. After a few months with lots of loving, and good food. (Lucky) became a very beautiful, playful, pet and good friend. We remained that way for many years until sadly one day he was hit by a car. For all of the above reasons, and memories I hope that you are able to name this dog (Lucky).

Let's all donate money to the society, and they can use it as they see fit........I agree that installing a security camera(s) might be a deterrent but if they did it discreetly and hid the camera (s) they would be able to identify people responsible for this type of cowardly, malicious treatment of poor helpless animals......just a suggestion. C'mon Sault Ste Marie, someone out there knows who is responsible.......do the right thing and step up and report the info needed to bring the person (s) to justice.

Okay folks - can we tone down the rage, here. No one knows what happened to this poor dog and that's the point. It's possible she ran away from her family and they are still looking for her. While it's probably just a wishful thought that no one intentionally abused this innocent and loving creature, let's not start lighting our torches until we know for sure.

In fact, instead let's rally behind the organization that is looking after her. She is going to need veterinary care, special food, blankets and probably medicine for fleas, intestinal parasites and rebuilding bone mass, etc.

I just came back from the Humane Society (because i realized that they close at 5pm and i wouldn't be off in time to go there after work so i used my lunch time to go) and they told me that i am just 1 of several people that are willing to adopt her. I knew that would be the case..., but i informed the staff of who i was (SaultJammer on SooToday.com) and advised them that i am definitely interseted in adopting her. They took my real name down and my home phone number. They said that she is currently being completely checked over by an animal clinic and that i can check back with them this coming Monday.

So we will have to wait the weekend to find out if she is up for adoption or if she requires additional medical attention first before they can adopt her out.

I am doing my best to offer my home as hers' - it's all in their hands.

I think that 'dutch touch 3/22/2013 12:13:39 PM' says it best with their post...

"I think this dog hope's it will never see it's owners again.
The dog hope's it will feel better soon.
We all hope the dog makes it.
Also with people like saultjammer we still have hope in peoples kindness.
On a personal note. I "hope" the owners rot in hell"
Mousie 3/22/2013 3:50:10 PM Report

I was reading the comments under this picture on the Humane Society facebook page. Somebody posted information about this poor dog, but it appears their comment has been deleted. What I can glean from the responses to that comment (by someone named Steven) is that this dog is 12 years old, a mastiff, had "lived a good life" (really???? being bred at the age of 12, starved, and God knows what else is a good life???) but was peeing on the floor so the owners got rid of her. I don't know if any of this is true or not, but I thought sharing this might jog somebody's memory out there.

There aren't words strong enough to describe how much this type of thing saddens and infuriates me. While I'm glad they ultimately did drop her off (and I agree that cameras would deter people from doing so) why the hell didn't they do it sooner?? Why did they let it get to this point? Oh right, I forgot, because they're monsters with no conscience who deserve to have the exact same things done to them as they did to her.

Animal cruelty laws in this country need to be made a lot more strict and penalties a lot worse than they are now, but the only way that's going to happen is if we start raising our voices for those who don't have voices of their own.

My first question for folks here and in the surrounding area; Who has pups for sale? Who has recently bought a pup that matches a close description to this dog? Large breed pups, just weaned? Check around, make the call to the proper authorities.

I think thats great that the founder of this poor, lost dog dropped it off as they did! That's fantastic...
bradley101 3/22/2013 5:55:39 PM Report

I seriously can't believe someone can do such a thing to a poor defenseless dog. Humans are the only things they have in this world and they trust us to give them what they need, because they give us unconditionally love.. The poor rat bastard who did this to that beautiful dog needs the same thing done to them. I don't think killing them would do the trick because that's an easy way out.. Make them suffer like that baby girl did. As for a name for her is Hope or Fighter. because she has kept her fight alive to make it this far.

I believe at the Humane Society drop off box should get camera's filming people dropping off animals, especially in cases like this.. This way people like this who drop off animals that need immediate attention can be caught and punished appropriately for undeserving animals like this poor sweetheart pootch..
sandpiper 3/22/2013 5:59:17 PM Report

This is not uncommon anymore. So sad to have to say that. If you cannot take care of an animal or do not have the time please do not take one in or at least have the decency to put the animal up for adoption before the animal suffers from starvation or worse. I hope that the person who is responsible for the state of this canine will rot in HELL. My heart goes out to the staff at our humane society when they have to deal with this. Thank you to all those who rescue animals in distress and to those who adopt. I wish this beautiful canine lady get the care and love she gracely deserves.
Working Man 3/22/2013 6:04:50 PM Report

So if you find a dog in this deprived condition, what exactly are you supposed to do? Leave him there to die, alone and lost? Or would it be wiser to drop it off at the Society?

And why exactly should the person who dropped it off, to be cared for, rot in hell again? I missed that.

{scott} 3/22/2013 7:20:41 PM Report

We are all angry and have our own ideas what we would like to do to the owner. However, we can't act on it but there is something constructive that we can do.

Those people who have debated on adopting and know they have the time, patience and can afford to care for and love an animal, PLEASE, PLEASE, go and adopt. By providing loving homes, you not only rescue a new life long friend, but you also create a space for another animal to be saved. THAT is something that can be done to help.

@junogirl...... My family and I would be delighted to donate $50 to that cause. And I truly "hope" that when they are caught their names will be posted on soo today to let us all know who these pieces of "poop" are.
CBradley 3/22/2013 11:02:24 PM Report

I hope that the owner is punished by the courts...He/she needs more than a verbal reprimand....and should be incarserated with community service to the local shelter for the rest of his/her life.Maybe they would then realize that animal abuse is against the law and just as bad as human abuse. There is no excuse they could use as a defense for the suffering this poor animal has endured. If it was lawful to treat them as they treated this dog and leave them deprived of food and proper care...well that would be a good thing. To bad this can't be done.
mikewcurtis25 3/22/2013 11:14:10 PM Report

What does it matter who the owner of this poor dog is? It's not like anyone is going to do anything to them! Hell a man in Wawa just got away with a slap on the wrist ( actually I think it amounted to $30 / dog or some ridiculous amount ) for his curelty to animals. It really is a sad world we live in.
lavendalilly 3/22/2013 11:45:51 PM Report

I for one would like to know who the owner is!!! This is now a matter of safety. What if he/she has other pets... how many have died. How many are dying. If they treat their animals like this, imagine how they treat friends or family. I don't want my kids around someone that does this to animals. Why would we NOT want to know who this is!

It is a tragedy what has happened to this dog. The owner should be starved. So happy the dog is getting help. Help a furry friend.

It's been wonderful to see the public's response in support of Karma and the SSMHS. She demonstrates a horrific case of neglect and abuse, however such cases happen in our own local backyards more than we're aware. The shelter staff regularly face animals in dire situations. We don't generally see this as we tour the rooms for adoption. Behind the scenes the shelter staff and volunteers work so hard to tend to and care for all of the animals they are brought, no matter the condition. The SSMHS has to do its own fundraising to support themselves and Karma represents only one animal of too many that needs extra medical attention, as well as emotional care. They are in dire need of blankets and bedding to give some comfort to the pets behind their bars while waiting for a loving home. Any donation is welcome I'm sure, and while you're thinking about it, lighten your pockets and purses and contribute your change to their "Penny Drive". These funds directly benefit animals like Karma. Friend of the shelter

On behalf of Karma (her new name) all we can say is THANK YOU!!! Your response to her situation has been overwhelming to say the least and has resulted in the owner being found, donations of blankets, toys & food and more than $1,500 in donations which will ensure she gets the veterinary care she so desperately needs. She is currently at the veterinary clinic and will remain there for the weekend for sure. Her condition is guarded and we ask you to keep her in your thoughts. As there is now an investigation, we are limited to the information we can provide but will continue to post updates on her condition. We apologize to those who left messages that we have not yet replied to - her care was our first priority today. We want you to know that NONE of this would have been possible without the help of our Facebook friends. She has a rough road ahead of her and we ask that you keep Karma in your hearts - we want her to make it through this ordeal and live the life she so deserves. THANK YOU from Karma and the shelter staff!

As the Mom to our 5 fur-babies, (Jersey-dog, Mystique-cat, Dodger-cat, Brody-cat & Bella Bunny) I am completely disgusted to see that anyone could have treated this gorgeous creature this way. ANYONE who thinks that this is acceptable needs a lesson, many actually, in "Treat Those How You Would Want to Be Treated-101".

Even after all she has been through, you can see in her eyes that she still has enough love in her heart to give someone, someone that will treat her with gentle love, sweet kindness, unending patience and heartfelt understanding.

May you live out the rest of your natural days within a home full of the love you so desperately need, Karma! Sleep well tonight knowing that SO MANY are wishing you well!

P.S. We ALL know that this poor girl's "owner" will NOT get anywhere close to the reprimand that this type of treatment warrants, so please tell me, WHERE is Karma's justice in that?

It would be nice if someone could identify the person who did this, publish their photo on Facebook and hopefully someone will take the SOB into a back alley or even better, out into the bush were he has little or no chance of making it back into civilization. Let the animals he so fondly abuses dine on his worthless carcass after they hunt him down. Anyone who would abuse a defenseless animal has no right to live among people.

To Vindicator :

The comment was "Some crack heads dog, when they do have a dog its usally always a Pit Bull.

They can,t take care of themselves but decide to take on raising a dog."

- implying the dog belonged to "some crack head" not that the dog was a crack head
Vindicator 3/23/2013 8:15:08 PM Report

To Peachesmom, I don't know why you directed a copy of a previous statement at me regarding the possibility of the poor dog belonging to a crack-head.

I have an excellent command of the English language and my posted response was not directed that statement, but rather ANYONE who would injure a helpless animal deserves no sympathy from society. In fact even if she was owned by a crack-head, they chose the life style, the dog did not. I would pay good money to watch these scumbags get what they deserved. To bad it is illegal to do to them what they really should have visited upon them.
