Alex Cushley, a student in Korah Collegiate's International Baccalaureate Programme, is one of a handful of young people from across the province chosen for Ontario’s 2004 Youth Tobacco Team (YTT).

With support from the Lung Association, the YTT is a panel of 10 high school students, aged 13 to 18, that advises stakeholders in the tobacco prevention field on ways to reduce tobacco use among young people.

Cushley (shown) will participate in teleconferences and in-person meetings with the other YTT members, researching tobacco issues pertinent to youth and developing action plans that are peer-oriented with limited adult intervention.

The team will develop a report with recommendations that will be presented to Ontario's Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

Last year's YTT recommended that all motion pictures that include smoking should be given a restricted rating and denied funding from the Ontario government.

Cushley was also recently presented with a gold Duke of Edinburgh pin, an award program created by H.R.H. The Prince Philip that recognizes individual development, self-training and personal achievement.
