Actress Betty Driver, who played the feisty barmais Betty Turpin Coronation Street for 42 years died in hospital last week. She was 91. She was laid to rest in a tearful farewell, yesterday.

Actress Betty Driver, who played the feisty barmais Betty Turpin Coronation Street for 42 years died in hospital last week.

She was 91.

She was laid to rest in a tearful farewell, yesterday.

Driver enjoyed a successful career as a cabaret singer in the 40s and 50s and was persuaded to come out of retirement to play Betty Turpin for a three month contract in 1969.

She's been a fixture on show ever since and has said she would never quit because she loved the cast and crew members too much to leave.
