Here's what they said about the Sault Youth Association at Wednesday's award presentation:

******************* Congratulations to The Sault Youth Association, this year’s recipient, and the first recipient, of the Diversity Award.

Sault Youth Association initiatives are rooted in the values, priorities and vision of Sault Ste. Marie’s young people.

Their projects are as diverse as the youth that they serve, supporting skills development and strengthening social networks.

In January of 2011, the Association launched a major research project – the Youth Strategy Research Initiative, connecting them with close to 600 young people.

Feedback identified economic well-being as a major quality of life issue along with a perceived lack of diversity acceptance.

In response to the latter, the Sault Youth Association launched the ‘Open Spaces’ initiative in July 2011. Under this umbrella, the Association is tackling discrimination and working toward an inclusive community which celebrates diversity.

Recognized for its Fresh Magazine, additional recent initiatives undertaken by the Sault Youth Association include: the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, the Fresh Art Workshop series, Buskerfest, Youth Shout Out, the election café and Roots to Youth.

With the Diversity Award, we recognize the many efforts undertaken by the Sault Youth Association to make our community a better, and more inclusive place, in which to live, work and raise a family.
