The Sault Ste. Marie Courthouse is closed today.

It will remain closed until an investigator from the Ontario Fire Marshall's gives the all clear to resume operations, says Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Media Relations Sergeant Lisa Kenopic.

The Crown's Office is working on a plan to deal with appearances that were to have taken place today.

An Ontario Fire Marshall's Office representative is en route from Sudbury to the scene of a suspicious fire at the courthouse.

Police say the fire at the Sault Ste. Marie Courthouse, 426 Queen Street East, initially appears to have been confined to a few offices in the basement.

Sault Ste. Marie Police and Fire Services were called to the scene at 3:47 a.m. today and are still on site.

They will be assisting investigations by the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office.
