************************* Car vs. moose fatal collision - Hwy 144

SUDBURY, ON - At 9:10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, members of the Sudbury OPP Detachment responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a car and a moose, on Highway 144, City of Greater Sudbury (5 km north of Regional Road 24 to Lively).

Investigation reveals that a southbound Pontiac Grand Am collided head-on with a moose.

The moose crashed through the windshield and roof of the car.

The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle and came to rest in a swamp.

Both occupants were taken to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury.

The male driver suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The female passenger suffered life threatening injuries and succumbed to her injuries earlier this morning.

No names are being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

An OPP collision reconstructionists attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

Officers had to close one lane of traffic while they investigated.

The investigation is continuing.
