************************ How to save energy... and money

Did you know that water heating is the second largest user of energy in your home after heating the home itself?

Yet, many people take it for granted that hot water runs as freely as cold water.

They are not aware of the amount of energy it takes to heat the water that washes our dishes, clothes, hands.

Typically 15 per cent of your yearly energy bill goes to heating this water.

There are ways to cut energy use and save money at the same time.

By minimizing the energy you use to heat water in your home, you are also helping the environment by producing less greenhouse gas emissions.

There are resources that help homeowners make energy efficient changes with minimal impact on their lifestyles.

Tools such as the Wise Energy Guide can help you understand and execute home conservation projects.

These tools also help reduce heating and cooling costs and explain the use of EnerGuide and Energy Star appliance labels.

Union Gas is providing its customers with free energy saving kits to assist with making homes more energy efficient.

Simply pick up a kit at a participating Home Depot store on the weekends of October 21 and October 28 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and you can save up to $120 annually.

The kit contains one low-flow massage showerhead, one low-flow kitchen swivel aerator, one low-flow bathroom aerator, two metres of foam pipe insulation and one copy of Wise Energy Guide - a $35 value.

Home Depot stores participating in this initiative include locations in Windsor, London (North & Southwest), Waterloo, Guelph, Brantford, Sarnia, Cambridge, Chatham, Hamilton, Ancaster, Oakville, Belleville, North Bay, Orillia, Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

"Contained in this kit are the tools to help save you money," says Ryan Hamid of Union Gas.

"Union Gas is trying to make conservation as easy as possible for our customers," he said.

"We know how busy homeowners can be and this is one of the many ways to cut costs."

Union Gas offers these tips:

- install a low-flow shower head (like the one included in the free kit, it has the same pressure but with less water flow)

- fix leaky taps

- install tap aerators (also included in the free kit)

- wash and rinse clothes in cold water

- wrap all hot water pipes with foam insulation
