In keeping with SooToday.com's policy of keeping Sault Ste. Marie's large Finnish population posted on all the really important news from Finland, we wanted you to know that Conan O'Brien arrived in Helsinki yesterday.

The American TV talk show host announced at the airport that he's there to ask the country's president, Tarja Halonen, for a cabinet position.

"In my country, when someone is instrumental in helping someone get elected, it's customary for the president to give that person a cabinet or ministerial position," O'Brien told reporters.

"I'd like to be the inspector of saunas, mostly women's saunas," he said.

As SooToday.com was telling you last month, O'Brien ran spoof campaign endorsements during the recent Finnish national election for incumbent President Tarja Halonen, claiming he admired her "dynamic personality ... quick mind, and most importantly — my good looks."

The Associated Press reports that O'Brien was met by 2,000 fans at the airport yesterday.

He will meet re-elected President Halonen at the presidential palace on Tuesday.

Later in his visit O'Brien will get an award for being "the most surprising and entertaining TV personality in Finland."

Finnish cable channel SUBTV carries Late Night with Conan O'Brien five days a week.

The program seen by Finnish viewers is delayed by a few days.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: SooToday.com wishes to advise our readers that Tarja Halonen is actually on top of Conan O'Brien. In the photos accompanying this article, we mean. We had to fire our digital caption-person today for being culturally illiterate and drinking enough Finlandia on the job to get really, really stupid.)
