49-year-old Mike Hayes of the Sault Ste. Marie Boxing Club was bloodied but unbowed when he stepped in the ring last night with a boxer well under half his age.

Hayes (shown in red trunks) eventually lost a split decision to 18-year-old Awad Yahya from Sudbury.

The fight was one of 11 staged last night at the Rankin Arena, with participating clubs including the Soo Michigan Boxing Club, Escanaba Boxing Club, Huff Boxing Club from Mississauga and Sudbury's Fight Club and Valley East Boxing.

Local boxers participating included Jamie Ellis, Tim Smith, Aaron Desmoulin, Pat Kelly, Marty Ellis, Steve McEwen and Garden River's Karen Bell.
