PUC electricity hike pegged at 8 percent

If PUC Services Inc.

If PUC Services Inc. is unsuccessful in its bid to get the Sault exempted from new electricity charges payable to Ontario's Independent Electricity Market Operator (IMO), local customers would see an eight percent hike in their power bills, City Council learned last night.

Brian Curran, president and chief executive officer of PUC Services, had previously told the Sault Star that the $3.6 million in new IMO charges would translate into an increase in the five percent range.

He gave out the new eight percent estimate during a presentation last night to Sault Ste. Marie City Council.

Curran also revealed that PUC expects to know within the month whether its efforts to get an exemption from the IMO charges have succeeded.

In the event that the charges are upheld, Curran says the contract between PUC and Great Lakes Power allows the issue to be taken to arbitration.
