NDP Candidate nomination for Sault Ste. Marie

Skip Morrison has announced he is seeking the nomination as NDP candidate for the Sault Ste. Marie Federal riding.

He is employed at Essar Steel Algoma as a crane operator, and as a Financial Advisor with Manulife Securities.

He is a member of USW LOCAL 2251, is a former Real Estate agent, and former Elementary school teacher with a degree in Biology from Queen's University and an Education degree from Lakehead University.

[His statement follows]

I was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie and raised my three children here.

I am proud of where I live and proud of the people here.

I've worked for years as a financial advisor assisting individuals and their families with investments, pensions, education plans, and retirement plans.

I'm aware of the intricacies of markets, interest rate policies, global securities and government policies affecting taxes and businesses.

The Conservatives and the Liberals have always tried to use 'trickle-down economics' as their solution for everything, but their policies are not working.

Too many jobs have been lost, with industries closed and relocated, and environmental failures ignored.

We do not need an out-of-control government whose main focus is on secrecy, corporate power and the wealthiest citizens.”

There are many solutions, easily and affordably implemented, which will reinvigorate the economy, improve our environment, and improve our lives.

Concerns that must be addressed include: affordable child care, decent minimum wage, reinforced environmental reviews, and reinforced agriculture and health policies which will ensure a safe and reliable food supply.

There must be increased attention to foreign companies dumping products into this country (not just after layoffs occur), and there needs to be a return to a foreign military policy focused on peacekeeping.

We have trade agreements and treaties with multi-national corporations which have flawed environmental and human rights records that have resulted in job losses, industry closures, deteriorating health conditions for Canadians and a degraded environment.

The Conservatives and Liberals honour those trade treaties, yet they fail to fully honour existing treaties with the First Nations of this land.

These are such basic needs of good government, yet we are still fighting for these issues in this riding and in this country.

This is the most important election of our lives.

I want to represent the people of this riding.

The nomination meeting to select the NDP candidate will be held June 16

New members must be registered by May 17 to be eligible to vote at the June 16 meeting
