A 603-foot freighter that ran aground south of St. Joseph Island on Wednesday is still stuck.

U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City reported this morning that the Mississagi is located outside the shipping channel and therefore is not impeding traffic on the St. Mary’s River.

The Coast Guard also reported that it has confirmed that a survey conducted Wednesday determined that all aids to navigation were in position in the water when the grounding occurred.

The ship’s owner, Lower Lakes Towing, continues to work with a salvage company on a plan to present to the Coast Guard.

The vessel was coming from Bruce Mines when the grounding occurred.

The Coast Guard says there was no damage to fuel tanks in the grounding and port and starboard ballast tanks on the bulk carrier did not sustain significant damage.
