NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

*************************
Just days before the start of Christmas holiday, what could be better for an intermediate or high school student than to experience the true meaning of Christmas by giving back to the community and to watch some first-rate hockey at the Essar Centre?

That is precisely what is being offered to Algoma District School Board (ADSB) students this week.

The First Annual Charity Classic is taking place on December 16 and 18.

Local ADSB hockey teams will compete and students from their respective high schools and 7/8 intermediate programs can gain admission to the game simply by donating a canned food item.

Both games will be held at the Essar Centre.

December 16 will see Superior Heights and Korah Collegiate face off at 12:30 p.m.

December 18 it will be White Pines versus Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS), and this game begins at noon.

Seating will be non-ticketed on a first come first serve basis.

Students who wish to attend will be required to bring canned food items to their school ahead of the games.

There will be no donations accepted at the door.

Buses will be provided to transport students to and from the Essar Centre.

Students are encouraged to wear their school spirit wear and be ready to cheer on their school team!

All canned items donated at Korah, Superior Heights and White Pines will benefit the local Soup Kitchen.

Cans from CASS will benefit the local food banks in Thessalon, Echo Bay, St. Joseph Island and Bruce Mines.

It is expected that these two games will provide some excellent competitive play as bragging rights are on the line as winners of the First Annual Charity Classic.

The high school hockey season is well under way and teams have been competing against one another for the past several weeks.

These two games will be part of the regular season and will count in the standings.

For further information please contact the participating Algoma District School Board High Schools.
