'Rather than b*tch about 1 hour, how about asking for 2?'

SooToday.com received the following letter from a faithful reader responding to the backlash our local YMCA has faced since announcing it will host one-hour women-only swims Sunday afternoons.

So the local YMCA has set one (1) hour out of one hundred sixty-eight (168) for women-only swimming.

And this has some folks foaming at the mouths and crying in the streets and beating their hands on walls and lashing their bodies until they bleed righteous blood.

Because they think this is some kind of unholy trampling of their rights and their privileges and their religion.

Because, according to these folks, the only people who would want a women-only swim are scary brown people and their scary religion and their scary culture.

Some quick thoughts for these folks...

First, Christianity does not hold some kind of special place in the history of mankind for never treating women like sh*t.

There are plenty of sects of Christianity that require women to cover their heads - plenty.

There are plenty of sects of Christianity that don't allow women to swim in the company of men who are not close family.

I am sure the local women who live in these circumstances would like to go swimming with their kids without their creepy uncle there.

Second, over the past few decades I have met and became friends with many women with some serious body-image issues.

And these women have said, many times over the years, that they desired a place to swim away from men's eyes, somewhere private and their own.

Lastly, Canada has never been a melting pot.

If you want a melting pot, your people immigrated to the wrong damn country.

We have a cultural mosaic here.

And again, if you don't like it, your people immigrated to the wrong damn country.

Look it, this Sunday afternoon swim time could be the beginning of something great among the different folks in this town.

Muslim women hanging with Hasidic women hanging with Christian women hanging with Atheist women, in one place, kids playing together.

Imagine that for a moment.

Instead of bitching about this one (1) hour out of one hundred sixty-eight (168), how about asking for two?
