Algoma University Board adds three new members

Boniferro, Shoemaker, and de Launay Join Board of Governors

SAULT STE. MARIE - Algoma University has named Paul Boniferro, David de Launay and Steven G. Shoemaker to its Board of Governors.

"These new members bring a wealth of experience to the table," said Board Chair Tim Lavoie. "Their collective work in industry, government, and Aboriginal affairs will assist the Board as the University continues to grow."

Paul Boniferro is the National Leader, Practices and People at McCarthy Tétrault and a partner in the firm's National Labour and Employment Group, practising in both Toronto and Calgary.

As a practising Labour and Employment lawyer, he advises federally and provincially regulated clients on a wide spectrum of employment issues.

He is also an instructor for the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO).

Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault, Mr. Boniferro was a senior policy advisor to the Ontario Minister of Labour, and is the past-chair of the HRPAO Government Affairs Committee.

He is a member of the Human Resources Association of Calgary and the Canadian and Calgary Bar Association, Labour and Employment Subsection. Mr. Boniferro is on the Board of Directors of The Canadian Club and sits on the Fundraising Campaign Cabinet for the Casey House Foundation.

He received his BA (Political Science) from the University of Western Ontario in 1987 and his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1991.

He was called to the Ontario bar in 1993 and the Alberta bar in 1997.

David de Launay is the acting/assistant deputy minister of the Strategic Policy and Planning Division of the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs.

He has been involved with Aboriginal communities in Ontario since 1988 and has led a number of initiatives involving Aboriginal People in partnership and economic development with the Ontario government.

David's home position is the ADM of Regional Operations Division of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources where he is responsible for the delivery of a diverse range of programs that strive to ensure the sustainability of natural resources and achieve biodiversity conservation across the province.

He has also worked in Cabinet Office, with Northern Development and Mines, and as the Director of Strategic Alliances for Sir Sandford Fleming College.

David has his Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from Trent University.

Steven G. Shoemaker comes to the Board as a practicing Associate with Wishart Law Firm, LLP, where he is focused on Corporate and Commercial advocacy as well as insurance litigation.

In the past he has worked for Gilbertson Davis Emerson LLP in Toronto, Ontario, assisting in insurance defence actions.

He was the contract and financial lead for negotiations at the Sault Area Hospital Corporation, and and was also previously employed in a legal and HR capacity with Algoma Steel Incorporated.

Mr. Shoemaker is a graduate of Lake Superior State University with a BA in Finance and Economics, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Law program at Michigan State University.

He was called to the New York State bar in 2006 and the Ontario bar in 2010.

He is fluent in French.
