Renowned Canadian artist to paint local landscape

SAULT STE. MARIE - Landscape artist John Hartman will use air, land and the Great Lakes to create a landscape painting for Sault Ste. Marie.

The Art Gallery of Algoma will host a special artist talk with John Hartman on May 31, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.

Born in 1950 in Midland, Ontario, John Hartman studied Fine Art at McMaster University.

Over the past 25 years, he has exhibited his paintings internationally including exhibitions in Canada, Great Britain, Denmark and Germany.

His paintings and prints are included in numerous public, corporate and private collections in Canada and around the world. John Hartman has painted cities both large and small, from Parry Sound, Port Severn and Owen Sound on shores of Georgian Bay, to London, New York, Toronto, Montreal and Glasgow.

The artist is particularly interested in cities that are also ports.

He writes: "The water reflects the sun and creates an intensity of light above these places. This light in the sky is so different in feeling from the material density of the cities themselves, but both are full of possibilities for painting."

Hartman will begin his project in Sault Ste. Marie on May 27 through to June 2, 2012.

During his visit he will have access to the city by air and water to complete his preliminary preparations.

Sketches and photographs will be completed by Hartman during his time here.

His vision is to capture the true dynamic and scope of our Northern Community.

He will also deliver an artist talk and walk at the Art Gallery of Algoma on May 31 beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a wine and cheese reception at the Gallery.

Tickets can be purchased at the AGA for $10 each.

Upon completion, an unveiling of his paintings will be in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Algoma, December 6, 2012 as part of Celebrate100!.

The Gallery will purchase a large scale painting to commemorate the 100th anniversary year of Sault Ste. Marie as a legacy piece.

The legacy painting will provide inspiration to our local community of practicing artists.

Showcasing a painting of our landscape will provide a source of encouragement to the continually growing arts community of Sault Ste. Marie.
