Road safety initiative: Seatbelt enforcement for the month of April - Interim results

As released earlier, officers with Traffic and Patrol Services of the Sault Ste Marie Police Service and Officers with the Ontario Provincial Police have been conducting spot checks throughout Sault Ste Marie for the Month of April as part of Seat Belt Safety Month.

As a result of these spot checks and even though the public was informed via the media of the upcoming campaign, over 125 persons have been charged with seatbelt offences in the city of Sault Ste. Marie in the first 18 days of April 2012. 

This is up from April 2011 when a total of 93 seat belt charges where laid for the entire month.

The motoring public is reminded that motorists and passengers found not to be wearing their seatbelt will be charged and face a fine of $240, and drivers also facing two demerit points.

Drivers are further advised they are responsible for anyone under 16 who is not wearing a seatbelt.
