Northern Training Partnership programs set to begin

SAULT STE. MARIE - Registration is now open for three exciting tuition-free programs funded by the Northern Training Partnership Fund: Renewable Energy and Green Construction Techniques, Construction Carpentry Techniques, and Basic Green Construction and Retrofitting Skills.

Each program allows participants to be provided with employability skills, academic preparation, valuable transferable skills training, accreditation and certification through a selection of green training initiatives.

Funding for this project was announced in February 2012 by MPP David Orazietti.

“The Northern Training Partnership Fund will help Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Northern Ontario get the training they need to benefit from new resource development opportunities in the renewable energy and green construction sectors,” states Ted Newberry, Continuing Education manager. “Eligible students receive tuition, books, supplies and construction equipment fully funded throughout the duration of the program.”

Garden River, Batchewana and M’Chigeeng on Manitoulin Island are the host communities for the Northern Training Partnership Fund programs, allowing local residents to learn on-site.

Garden River will host the Renewable Energy and Green Construction Techniques while Batchewana and M’Chigeeng will host Construction Carpentry Techniques.

These programs are a 38-week Ontario College certificate program running from June 25, 2012 to March 22.

Each community will also host the Basic Green Construction and Retrofitting Skills program, commencing in mid-September.

All three programs will contain an 8-week Employability Skills and Academic Preparation study that includes introductory courses in Communications, Math, Computers, training in First Aid, CPR and WHMIS and Renewable Energy concepts.

Registration is open to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Ontario residents, over the age of 18 on any of the three communities.

Following completion of any of these programs, two staff job developers will assist students in gaining employment.

For more information on this new initiative at Sault College, please plan to attend a community information session on Friday April 20 at 2 p.m. in Sault College’s Essar Hall Multimedia Centre.

The session will introduce the programs to community service groups, First Nation communities and potential students.

For further information on requirements to each program, how to apply or to RSVP for the Information Session contact Lori Amendola, project coordinator at (705) 759-2554 ext. 2598
