$3 million in coins strewn across Hwy 11 following collision

A collision on Highway 11 near Kirkland Lake yesterday morning has left two people with serious injuries and approximately $3 million in loonies and twonies strewn across the road.

A chain reaction began when a southbound Brinks security truck carrying the cash crossed the centre line and struck a rock-cut in the opposite ditch.

The truck was then struck by a northbound transport, and the transport struck by a mini van and another transport.

The driver of the Brinks truck suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, as was the vehicle's passenger.

Highway 11 was closed for much of the day yesterday and crews remain on-scene to clear the roadway of the uncirculated coins.

Police are standing guard as the valuable cargo is being cleared by contractors using an industrial-strength magnet.

Police continue to investigate the collision and have yet to determine if it was caused by human error or mechanical failure.
