Algoma EMS passes the test

ELLIOT LAKE, ON (March 26, 2012) - The Algoma District’s ambulances and paramedics got a clean bill of health recently.

Algoma Emergency Medical Services, operated by the Algoma District Services Administration Board, received an unannounced inspection at its paramedic station in Elliot Lake on February 29, 2012, by staff from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

The Elliot Lake station underwent a full inspection which included a review of the paramedic staff, the station facilities, as well as the ambulance vehicles.

Henry Alamenciak, chief of EMS, was notified of the results this week.  

Algoma EMS was found to be in full compliance in every inspection category.

“We are obviously very pleased with the results. We are proud of our paramedics and the job they do,” said Paul Guertin, deputy chief of EMS.

Algoma EMS is slated to undergo a full service review inspection later this year. 

A Ministry of Health service review can be likened to an accreditation process.

“A team of Health Ministry inspectors visit each paramedic service every three years and reviews all aspects of the operation over the course of several days. We look forward to and welcome these reviews by the Ministry. They provide us with an opportunity to not only demonstrate our compliance with the Ambulance Act and other Provincial regulations but also to showcase the quality of service that our dedicated paramedics provide to the Algoma District on a daily basis. These reviews are excellent opportunities to review any operational matters where we can improve the important service we provide” said Guertin.

All land ambulance services in the province are overseen by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care with respect to service guidelines, equipment, patient care standards and the physical sites.  

Routine inspections are performed by Ministry staff to ensure that Land Ambulance Services in the province are in compliance with all Provincial regulations.

Algoma EMS 101

Algoma EMS is operated by the Algoma District Services Administration Board (ADSAB) and has its headquarters in Elliot Lake, Ontario.

Algoma EMS provides emergency prehospital care to the Algoma District covering approximately 48,000 sq kms. 

Algoma EMS has 21 ambulances and emergency response vehicles and a staff of approximately 70 paramedics who work at its eight bases located in the following communities. 

Our paramedics attend to over 7,000 calls for ambulance service each year.
