OTTAWA - The passion for hockey in Sault Ste. Marie starts at a young age.

Elementary schools from across the city attended many of the games held during the recent Budweiser CARHA Hockey World Cup (March 4-11, 2012).

A standout amongst the participating schools was the children from St. Ann’s Catholic School.

When the students arrived at the John Rhodes Arena for the Budweiser Open Division game between the AK Bars and Torpedo, both from Russia, they were decked out in t-shirts and face paint!

They also created posters and provided the teams with letters that were written in both English and Russian.

At the end of the game both teams took to centre-ice to salute their fans.

Spearheaded by teacher, Christina Principe, St. Ann’s School integrated Russian history, heritage and culture into their curriculum.

“It was fantastic to witness the many painted young faces and creative signs in support of the Russian teams. We have received terrific feedback from the Russian clubs, each of which were made to feel like superstars as a result of St. Ann’s enthusiasm!”, says Lori Lopez, director, Business Operations, CARHA Hockey.

The Adopt-A-Team concept was established as a way for the CARHA Hockey World Cup to give back to the community while involving Sault Ste. Marie students.

As a result these efforts, St. Ann’s Catholic School will be awarded a $2,500 donation from the CARHA Hockey World Cup to assist with the purchase of new sporting and recreational equipment for the school.
