Exchange rates prompt International Bridge toll adjustment

International Bridge customers paying with Canadian currency will see their toll rate increased slightly to reflect the current exchange rate with U.S. currency.

The changes, effective Sunday, April 1, 2012, are the result of the currency equity review done by bridge officials twice each year.

Based on the average exchange rates from the past six months, the Canadian currency passenger vehicle tolls will be $3, on par with U.S. currency.

The Canadian currency commuter (Prox card) rate will be increased from $2.05 to $2.10, while the U.S. currency rate will remain at $2.10.

The commercial truck rates will remain $4 (US) per axle.

Commercial truck rates will increase to $4.00 (CDN) per axle, on par with the U.S. rate.

To maintain currency equity in toll rates, the joint Michigan/Canada intergovernmental agreement under which the bridge operates mandates that the Canadian currency toll rates be adjusted every April and October, if the difference in currencies is large enough.

A complete list of toll rates can be obtained at the International Bridge Administration (IBA) offices or toll booths, or online at www.michigan.gov/iba.

Deposits purchased on trip-based accounts before Feb. 26, 2009, will be honored at the original purchase price for accounts in good standing.

The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is totally self-funded, primarily through toll revenue, and receives no operational subsidy from any state, provincial, or federal government agency.
