Artists from Sault Ste. Marie have been nominated for a number of Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards, it was announced today.

Artists from Sault Ste. Marie have been nominated for a number of Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards, it was announced today.

Hosted annually by Music and Film in Motion, the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards honours the achievements of artists from across Northern Ontario.

Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, writer, filmmaker, and Confederation College film production professor Lee Chambers (pictured) has been nominated as Screenwriter of the Year for his Make It Short film project Hugh Jackman Saves the World.

Of the film, Chambers told SooToday.com: "Hugh Jackman Saves The World is an engaging comedy that shows that the gadget-obsessed youth of today may also be using the gear for positive reasons. When a gang of 15-year-old Australia girls is confronted about their cell phone and iPad activity they giggle away... But secretly, away from adult supervision, they are deep into a discussion about world politics and hatch a unique plan to head off a pending confrontation."

Taking the Make It Short film project abroad, this short was shot in Perth, Western Australia last summer on 16mm film with students from Roleystone District High School.

It's currently in post-production and is expected to be released this coming summer, Chambers tells us.

Now based in Ottawa, Sault band Kalle Mattson received a nomination for Album of the Year by a Duo or Group for its full-length release Anchors.

The band's front man, Kalle Wainio was given a SOCAN Songwriter of the Year nod for his song Singing Knives.

Originally from the Sault, Andrew Sowka, Vince Aquilina and Chis Cucullo form North Bay's Faraway Neighbours and have been nominated for Album of the Year by a Group or Duo and Engineer of the Year for their debut release Carry On, Man.

The 2012 Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards ceremony takes place in Sudbury at Laurentian University on April 28.
