Provincial investment in Sault YMCA supports healthy and active living

SAULT STE. MARIE - David Orazietti, MPP was joined yesterday evening by Bryan Hayes MP, Mayor Debbie Amaroso and Kim Kanmacher, CEO of the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA to celebrate the completion of $3.3 million in upgrades to the local YMCA.

“Our government continues to invest in local organizations that support a healthy active lifestyle, because we recognize the positive impact physical activity has on overall health and wellbeing,” said Orazietti. “By supporting facility upgrades to the YMCA, we are expanding the fitness and recreational opportunities available to residents of our community and helping to make Sault Ste. Marie a healthier place to live.”

Funding for the YMCA building improvement project was provided by the provincial and federal governments through the Recreation Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as well as the YMCA.

The province contributed $1 million to the facility improvement project.

Upgrades to the YMCA include the purchase of new, state-of-the-art equipment for the fitness centre, a new aerobics studio and new free weight area, as well as enhancements to locker rooms and the construction of a new accessible family change room.

“This is an exciting time for the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA as we complete an extensive renovation project funded through the support of the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Program and re-introduce the YMCA to the community,” said Kim Kanmacher, CEO of the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA. “For over 100 years the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA has provided accessible, affordable, high-quality health, fitness and recreation services in Sault Ste. Marie. YMCA Relaunch 2012 gives our YMCA an opportunity to illustrate how we will meet the needs of our community today and in the future.”

In celebration of the facility improvements, the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA will be hosting an open house weekend from Friday, January 20 to Sunday, January 22.

Members of the community are invited to visit the YMCA for a facility tour and to participate in free programs including fitness classes, swimming evaluations, parent and child programs, youth programs, open swim times and fitness centre orientations.
